WORKFLOW SECTIONS

Our production process is divided into nine Workflow sections. Each stage is triggered either by the author or by JHP staff, or in some cases both. Once a stage is completed and approved it will automatically initiate the next one and assign an "expected" completion date to the new stage. You can open up each Workflow section by clicking on the "down" arrows to the right of the bar, and close them by clicking on the "up" arrows (see image below, arrows circled). You can leave notes in each section in "Notes for this workflow stage" (see image below). If you change the "Expected Date" or leave a note for us then please click on "Save Changes" afterwards (see image below). A green section is "Approved" and finished with; a yellow section is the current stage; a red section is overdue.

Manuscript Upload and Approval: This stage will be triggered once you have signed the contract and the Publishing Director has put the book "In Production". The "Expected Date" is set at one week from "In Production", but if you're still working on the manuscript you can change the date to suit your timeline. Once you have uploaded the manuscript the Editorial Manager will check it, and if they're happy there are no issues they will "Approve" the section and it will move to...

Copyediting: This stage will have an "Expected Date" set at 30 days from the approval of the previous section. Once the copyeditor has completed their work, they will upload the revised manuscript and "Approve" the section. You will then receive a notification telling you that the manuscript is ready for you to check. Once you're happy with it, you can upload the final version to...

Final Copyedit: The "Expected Date" on this section is set for seven days after the copyeditor approves the Copyediting stage. If you need more time to check the manuscript, please feel free to change the date in this section as this will be your last chance to make changes. Once you've uploaded the manuscript and "Approved" the section, the Editorial Manager will be notified and he will give the manuscript one last high-level inspection including the deletion of marks-ups of tracked changes and any remaining comments, and then "Approve" the section, which will trigger a notification to the designer and move production forwards to...

Proofs: You will not see any activity in this section as it is closed to authors. The "Expected Date" is set at 60 days from when the Editorial Manager approves the Final Copyedit stage. We aim to produce proofs within two weeks of receiving your approved manuscript, allow four weeks for proofreading, and then two weeks for corrections to be made. Books with images or complicated layouts may take longer. At the same time we will be producing a draft cover. Once the Proofs are finalized and have been "Approved" by the Editorial Manager, the final work will begin on the...

Cover: The "Expected Date" for this section is set at 75 days from when the Editorial Manager approves the Final Copyedit stage. We allow 15 days from the finalizing of the Proofs, but it rarely takes more than two. Once the Editorial Manager is happy with the full and final cover, he will "Approve" this section and trigger the next two stages further down the line...

ebook: The "Expected Date" for this section is set 240 days from when the Editorial Manager approves the Cover stage. Once the ebook is produced the section will be "Approved" by the ebook designer and the ebook will be ready for distribution (see ebook Distributed below).

Printing: The "Expected Date" for this section is also set 240 days from when the Editorial Manager approves the Cover stage. This is when the office will send an order to the printer for the initial run; the date is six to eight weeks prior to publication to allow books to reach the warehouse and be distibuted from there to retailers.

ebook Distributed: The "Expected Date" for this section is set 30 days from when the ebook stage is "Approved".

Book in Warehouse: The "Expected Date" for this section is set 30 days from when the Printing stage is confirmed, although the books normally reach the warehouse in two to three weeks.
